It’s one of the first questions people ask after a concrete pour: “How long before I can walk on it, drive on it, or carry on with the job?”

The honest answer is a bit more nuanced than a simple number. Concrete doesn’t just ‘dry”’; it cures, and that process happens over time.

Typical ready mix concrete setting times

Under normal conditions, ready mix concrete takes 1-4 to initially set, but reaches maximum strength in around 28 days.

How to ensure proper curing

Keep the concrete moist

This is one of the most important steps.

Concrete needs moisture for the curing process. If it dries out too quickly, the chemical reaction slows down, and the final strength can be reduced.

Common ways to retain moisture include:

  • Lightly spraying the surface with water
  • Covering it with plastic sheeting
  • Using curing compounds that seal in moisture

So, how long do you really need to wait?
  • For light foot traffic, wait at least 24-48 hours. 
  • For light use, give the concrete 7 days to set.
  • At 28 days, the concrete is fully cured and ready for normal use.
